Wireless Backhaul

Wireless service providers migrating their mobile offerings to packet-based 3G and 4G/LTE/WiMAX technologies are facing a significant increase in bandwidth demands (up to 20 times today’s rates by 2012) over their wireless backhaul networks, whether their own or leased from ILECs or alternative access providers. To provide this level of capacity in a cost-efficient manner, wireless backhaul is migrating to Ethernet from T1 TDM private lines.

However, with Ethernet’s benefits for wireless backhaul come operational challenges. If not managed properly, OpEx can quickly escalate and drive out profits when delivering service outlined by some of the most strict service level agreements (SLAs) in telecom: 1-5 millisecond 1-way delay and jitter, guaranteed throughput and carrier-grade availability. To ensure Ethernet backhaul networks realize their potential, it’s critical that providers establish standards-based, end-to-end operations, administration & maintenance (OAM) and performance  monitoring from the mobile switching center (MSC) to the cell site.

Accedian Networks’ ESAP TM Ethernet Service Assurance Platform and EtherNID TM performance assurance demarcation units are the industry’s choice for deploying, monitoring and maintaining high-performance wireless backhaul networks.
