Frost & Sullivan: Telepresence Strengthens Position in Visual Communications Market

By Arvind Arora, TMCnet Contributor

In a new report, “Telepresence Global Markets, ” Frost & Sullivan (News - Alert) said that, despite rising prices, telepresence solutions are becoming more popular to address business’ demanding communications needs.

The firm found that telepresence technology has been having a wider impact within organizations, and is being used to facilitate project meetings, foster a closer team spirit between distantly located workers, and provide an alternative to essential executive business meetings for which travel previously was required. Telepresence (News - Alert) markets generated revenues of $165.3 million during 2007, and that number is expected to reach $1.44 billion by 2013.

Telepresence provides companies with communications capabilities by properly delivering a tightly linked solution of systems and services instead of a single technology.

After the market debuts of Cisco Systems (News - Alert) and HP in 2006, telepresence has burst into the mainstream, with many corporations now viewing it as a very realistic alternative to business travel. Typically, return on investment (ROI) justifies the relatively high price tag (News - Alert). As a result, companies like Teliris have successfully created a niche market in the visual communications spectrum.

Dominic Dodd, principal analyst at Frost & Sullivan, said that while telepresence has been around for a number of years, it is only in the past two years that it has made a major impact.

Dodd noted that telepresence has re-wakened C-level executives to the massive potential of visual communications to provide real answers for several key issues facing organizations today.

Telepresence consists of critical technology systems and service components that require vendors to work closely with network services providers and systems integrators to deliver consistently, that makes it a complex solution. Although a number of vendors are capable of providing customers with a ‘one-stop shop,’ others have been building key alliances to create the complete solution. The ability of the telepresence market to grow will depend on the quality of these partnerships, and the consistency with which solutions are delivered.
