Study Shows China, U.S. and U.K. Lead in Development of NGNs

Patrick Barnard, TMCnet Associate Editor

Two thirds of the world’s next generation networks (NGNs) are located in China, the United States and the United Kingdom, a new report published by Dittberner Associates Inc. states.

According to Dittberner Associates’ “Worldwide NGN Migration Status and Vendors’ Opportunity Analysis Report,” China accounted for more than 27 percent of the world’s NGN installed base at the end of 2004, with the U.S. and U.K. accounting for 26 and 13 percent, respectively.

“The development of NGN infrastructure in these top three countries, particularly in China and the United States, is widespread and involves the dominant incumbent carriers, all new competitive carriers, ISPs, cable TV operators and cellular operators,” a press release from Dittberner Associates states.

The report finds that among 26 vendors supplying NGN equipment, Nortel, Huawei and Ericsson account for more than 50 percent of NGN installed ports.

Using Dittberner Associates Inc.’s databases for worldwide NGN and digital switching installed ports, the study analyzes the medium term NGN development trends in the countries surveyed, based on ten independent factors affecting the adoption of NGN technology by carriers.

One of the factors - the age of the digital switching installed base – significantly impacts the rate of its replacement with packet switching technology (class 4 and class 5 replacement). The older the TDM infrastructure, the higher the financial and technical incentives are to increase the scope and speed of replacement.

According to the report, countries that will offer opportunities to NGN equipment vendors in the future are Japan, Germany, Brazil, France, Italy, India, Russia, Taiwan, Korea, Canada and the U.K. These countries represent 85 percent of the total digital switching installed ports of the countries surveyed and 87 percent of the NGN ports.
