IT EXPO Keynote Preview: Charles Rutledge

Michelle Amodio, TMCnet Associate Editor

From January 24-27, 2006, TMC will host the 13th INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO, the industry’s #1 VoIP conference in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
On Thursday, January 26, 2006, Charles Rutledge, Vice President of Marketing for Quintum Technologies will be delivering a keynote address at 5:15pm.
With twenty years of experience in the communications industry, Charles has held positions in marketing, business development, product management and engineering.
Mr. Rutledge will be addressing the VoIP community, discussing the development of VoIP into the market and the challenges of deploying VoIP.
VoIP has evolved in both enterprise and service provider networks, but the evolution of capabilities “better” than the telephone network have been largely limited to VoIP “islands”.  These islands are bridged by the PSTN limiting the capabilities of VoIP.  Moving VoIP beyond the telephone network will VoIP peering to allow new enhanced capabilities be delivered end to end over IP.  At the same time VoIP will need effectively not just interface with, but take advantage of the massive legacy telephony infrastructure that is in place.
As VoIP makes this expansion into the mainstream market, the challenges of deploying VoIP over the “last mile” IP access network include Ease of Deployment, Quality of Service, Reliability, Security and Remote Management.
Addressing these challenges requires intelligent access equipment at the edge of the enterprise network.  Access at the edge of the enterprise network will require both intelligent VoIP gateway capability to interface with the legacy telephony world, and session controller capability to support VoIP peering, thus bringing communications features beyond the traditional telephone network.
As End to End VoIP pushes intelligence to the edge of the network and creates opportunity for innovation, it also pushes responsibilities to support QoS, Reliability, SLAs and Security.  This must also be done in a manner that access equipment can be easily deployed and managed on a scale sufficient to support the potential growth found in mainstream markets.
