NET VX Gateway Eases Belgian Publisher's Microsoft OCS-Based Unified Communications Deployment

Network Equipment Technologies (News - Alert), a global provider of multi-service network and voice exchange solutions for government and enterprise customers, announced today that Brepols Publishers successfully facilitated its Microsoft (News - Alert) Office Communications Server (OCS)-based implementation of unified communications (UC) and unified messaging using NET’s VX Series intelligent VoIP switches and gateways.
Brepols, an international academic publishing house in Belgium, used the NET (News - Alert) VX Series’ to implement Microsoft’s solution in its existing network-and-telecom environment so that it could rapidly gain the business benefits of convergence without losing the use of its existing fax machines, compromising access to local emergency services, or otherwise disrupting its ongoing business, according to Chuck Rutledge, vice president of Corporate Marketing for NET.
“There are a lot of potentially lucrative things that companies can do with communications to improve their bottom lines, but there can also be significant obstacles to achieving those short- and long-term project goals,” said Rutledge. “Brepols has used the advanced VoIP gateway features found the in the VX1200 to address the complexities of integrating Microsoft OCS into their network.
Brepols has two main offices plus a warehouse in Belgium, as well as an office in New York. Nearly half of the company’s employees are teleworkers utilizing a laptop and VPN connection. By moving to VoIP and unified communications, Brepols sought to significantly improve staff productivity and accelerate a wide range of important day-to-day business processes. It selected OCS as its core convergence platform.
“Their roadmap has a number of challenges, including SIP WiFi clients registered to the VX, SIP trunks to other countries, such as France, the U.S. and Italy, and Polycom (News - Alert) SIP phones,” said Rutledge. “All of these can be addressed with the VX Series.”
In implementing Microsoft OCS in conjunction with VoIP on its existing infrastructure, the company faced several challenges including: Avoiding costly PBX replacement and/or re-configuration Ensuring reliability of communication between all internal and external end-points; Supporting existing fax machines, door phones, and other legacy analog devices; Implementing Auto-Attendant functionality for three different languages (French, Dutch, and English) for a single inbound number
To address these challenges, Brepols selected the NET VX1200 gateway. The VX Series intelligent VoIP switches and gateways provide flexible “any-to-any’ connectivity, robust call routing functions, Active Directory integration, and the granular control of messaging parameters necessary to accommodate complex Microsoft OCS configurations. The VX Series also provides essential features such as SIP registration for WiFi (News - Alert) clients, embedded QoS mechanisms, and simplified connectivity to both PSTN and external IP telephony service providers -- which gives the company optimum flexibility for reducing its international toll charges.
“NET’s VX Series enabled Brepols to quickly and effectively implement highly sophisticated converged communications in a relatively small – but still rather complex – existing infrastructure,” said Wim Borgers, IT and Administration Manager for Brepols. “We are extremely satisfied with both the functionality of NET’s hardware and the obvious expertise that NET demonstrated in accommodating our very exacting technical requirements.”
