According to the study titled "Getting Louder: Broadband IP Telephony" conducted by research firm In-Stat, despite its newness, VoIP-based communications have gained significant momentum over the last two years. Analysts believe US subscription totals are poised to reach a whopping 3.2 million by the end of this year. The findings prove that indeed VoIP is transforming the world of telecommunications.
The firm also found that carriers and enterprises have started to gradually shift from their traditional circuit-switched infrastructure to VoIP-based communications. Following the trend, many home users have decided to drop traditional telephony and adopt VoIP-based communications as well.
In fact, according to performance measurement info provider Telephia, a reported fifty-three percent of high-tech homes subscribing to Internet telephony services have completely replaced and disconnected their landline phones.
"The future growth of Broadband IP Telephony will continue to be driven by cost savings and feature service innovation," says David Lemelin, In-Stat analyst. "The integration of cellular, WiFi, and VoIP, which is already taking place on a limited basis, will likely be the next big step in the growth of Broadband IP Telephony."
Additionally, the firm's report found that "customer education and acceptance, including concerns over service quality are still major challenges for service providers and loss of connectivity during power outages and E911 limitations remain concerns as well."
