Tektronix, a company that specializes in testing, measuring and monitoring solutions for a variety of industries including communications, announced today its plans to acquire Montreal, Canada-based telecommunications and VoIP
test solutions manufacturer Minacom.
In a press release, Tekronix said its purchase of Minacom (News - Alert) for $27 million will expand its reach into the market for next generation network management solutions.
Tektronix’s (News - Alert) offerings include passive telecommunications testing solutions for various types of networks (including mobile, IP
, SS7, and WiMAX). Minacom’s active test solutions for VoIP, voice, video, Internet, fax and fax-over-IP complement Tektronix’s existing products.
Michel Nadeau, President and CEO of Minacom, told TMCnet a key reason the two companies fit together so well is that Tektronix specializes in passive testing (which looks at the signaling of calls) and Minacom specializes in active testing (which looks at the media involved).
Customers of both companies have been asking about the other type of test solutions, Nadeau said, and now they will have access to a complete range of test products.
Nadeau used a sports analogy to illustrate this point. Before the acquisition, he said, Tektronix was a great NHL hockey team that missed an important player--a leading goal tender. That missing player is Minacom.
"We're just one player, but a very important one," Nadeau said. "Now Minacom gets to play in the NHL, and together with Tektronix the team is looking forward for the Stanley Cup."
The deal specifies that Minacom’s 35 employees will continue to run Tektronix’s newest division from their Montreal offices.
“This acquisition will enable Tektronix to offer both active and passive probing capabilities for modern and legacy networks,” Tektronix’s Senior Vice President and General Manager, Rich McBee, said in a statement.
McBee continued: “The integration of these products into one solution will accelerate delivery of our product roadmaps in key areas such as IP voice, video and data services and for access and edge network service management.”
