Emergent, CableMatrix, VCom and AudioCodes Deliver VoIP Over WiMAX Solution

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

Earlier this month at GlobalComm (News - Alert) 2006, Emergent Networks—a provider of telecommunications software for emerging networks—and three other companies unveiled a new VoIP Over WiMAX solution.

CableMatrix Technologies (provider of Quality of Service, or QoS, solutions), VCom (manufacturer of WiMAX equipment), and AudioCodes (provider of VoIP media gateways and servers) joined with Emergent to develop the solution, which enables high-quality IP calls to be sent wirelessly using the IEEE 802.16 standard.

Call quality is ensured by incorporating dynamic QoS during authorized IP voice sessions.

At GlobalComm, the four companies demonstrated this functionality live by sending a call from VCom’s booth to AudioCodes’ (News - Alert) booth.

According to a press release from the companies, this is a completely deployable, SIP-based solution available now for broadband wireless service providers.

Contributions to the solution from each company are outlined below.

a. Emergent’s Session Border Controller and CableMatrix’s Policy Decision Function are used to trigger QoS in real-time.
b. The call is initiated by AudioCodes’ Analog Terminal Adapter.
c. QoS allocation is achieved VCom’s VistaMAX base station based upon the call’s characteristics.
d. AudioCodes’ core media gateway terminates the call off network.

“Our demonstration showed how wireless broadband operators can effectively manage the high-bandwidth demands of media-rich IP applications such as voice and video,” CableMatrix’s vide president of business development, Jay Malin, said in a statement.

Malin continued: “Together with VCom, AudioCodes and Emergent, we developed a complete solution that, by efficiently managing bandwidth resources, creates new revenue generating opportunities for the operator.”

VCom’s vice president of business development, Richard Blenkinsop, added: “Through integrating our technologies, we provide operators the ability to reserve bandwidth resources that guarantee end-to-end call quality.”
