Kentrox, a company specializing in VoIP Quality of Service solutions and a manufacturer of cell site Radio Access Networking (RAN) products, today announced that its CrossPATH multi-service cell site aggregation device now supports Inverse Multiplexing over Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM IMA).

 

The new capability “enables wireless carriers to aggregate and manage today’s existing networks while providing migration options to future packet-based technologies,” Kentrox (News - Alert) said in a press release.

 

The company further explained that UMTS radios—used by many wireless carriers deploying 3G, bandwidth-intensive services—leverage ATM IMA as the primary high-speed access technology.

 

“CrossPATH support of ATM IMA is the first in a series of product releases for packet backhaul to help manage the 3G radio traffic growth,” Kentrox said in its announcement.

 

Cell cite backhaul represents a major portion of wireless carriers’ monthly expenses, and CrossPATH is designed to “minimize these costs and improve efficiencies by fully utilizing backhaul circuits that carriers already own without having to purchase new cell site equipment.”

 

Like Kentrox’s VoIP QoS products, CrossPATH features an embedded, browser-based GUI (graphical user interface) that simplifies installation, configuration, and network management.
