Case Study: Kentrox QoS Routers Solve Connectivity Problems for Ernest Homes

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

Especially for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), communications technology is vital but can have significant negative effects if it doesn’t work properly. That was the case with Ernest Homes, a locally-owned homebuilding company in Savannah, Georgia.

The company’s employees working at sales centers in model homes needed consistent server access to back-office software using a high-speed Internet connection. Unfortunately, the routers Ernest Homes was using were not reliable.

“The routers were losing their connection to the server regularly,” said Ernest Homes Vice President of Construction Jeff Kramer, in a case study by Kentrox. “We didn’t really know how often or how many times, but when it happens, the sales associates let us know. We are talking to prospective clients all day long, so we need to have reliable access to information when a customer wants it.”

To solve this problem, Ernest Homes contacted Infinity, Inc., a local system integration company, for advice on choosing new routers.

Ernest Homes’ list of criteria for the routers included:
  • Ability to quickly reconnect if Internet connection is lost
  • Low maintenance devices ideal for locations without IT staff
  • Capable of handling future communications needs, such as VoIP
Infinity suggested the Kentrox’s (News - Alert) Q-Series QoS access routers. After comparing those routers to other products, Ernest decided to go with Kentrox.

The company chose Kentrox’s Q2300 Ethernet QoS Access Router because it offered ease of configuration, high-quality reporting and monitoring, affordability, and the advantages of a single solution from a single vendor. The Q2300 is an all-in-one solution that ties together an IP router, VPN appliance, Quality of Service appliance, firewall, and Ethernet switch.

“We were able to quickly install the routers at each sales center and be assured that the previous connectivity issues would be resolved,” said Chuck Brown, President of Ernest Homes, in Kentrox’s case study.

Kramer added: “The biggest benefit that we’ve seen is reliable connectivity. Our sites are now having no problems staying connected to the server, so our sales associates can focus on what they know best – customers.”

In addition to solving the connectivity problems, Kentrox’s routers also offer future-proofing for Ernest Homes’ communications system: if the company in the future decides to move to VoIP, the routers will make the transition easy. They’re already pre-configured with QoS functionality to prioritize VoIP traffic.
