Digital Communications has forever changed the way we communicate, but not everyone has adopted the technology. There are still many individual consumers and organizations that haven't made the transition from their analog systems. In order to address this large customer base, hardware manufacturers are developing solutions that are bringing digital technologies to analog systems without having to ditch legacy platforms. The new line of high-performance SmartNode enterprise session border controllers (eSBC) from Patton (News - Alert) is going to provide a range of digital communications solutions, but it also has an optional built-in VoIP gateway that provides up to eight ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI) and/or Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) or analog Foreign eXchange Subscriber interface (FXS) telephony ports.

The BRI and FXS features of the SmartNode eSBC are important options as simple Analog Telephone Adapters (ATA) are becoming obsolete because of their limitation when it comes to customer-premises equipment (CPE). Businesses, even SMBs, need CPEs that are much smarter than ATAs with VoIP gateways capable of delivering a range of communications features.

“Simple analog telephony adapters—known as ATAs—are going obsolete. Nowadays companies that want to connect existing voice and fax devices in All-IP environments need a much smarter CPE,” said Peter Burkhalter, CEO, Patton-Inalp.

According to Patton, the new series of SmartNode eSBCs are VoIP CPEs for small-offices that want SIP-based all-IP or cloud communication systems, including on-premises and hosted unified communications (UC) by integrating their existing BRI lines and FXS devices into these services.

Patton is giving businesses the option of providing connectivity, network survivability, security and quality of service to legacy systems, which is not the current trend by most manufacturers of eSBCs, as most are designed for SIP-to-SIP architecture.

The SmartNode eSBC Series of VoIP Gateways have eight FXS analog interfaces with two, four or eight FXS interfaces, supporting simultaneous voice or fax calls. This provides all-IP applications for businesses that have legacy systems looking to integrate a UCC environment or migrate good old fax devices to the next-generation network infrastructure.

The call features include advanced local call switching with virtual interfaces and routing tables that can be programmed to handle multiple calling options with a high degree of flexibility, such as local call switching, soft fallback to alternative routes and simultaneous connections to multiple SIP services/IP PBXs. And because the platform is designed to address legacy systems, it offers interoperability with voice and T.38 fax with leading SIP service providers, softswitch vendors, and major IP PBX (News - Alert) manufacturers. This comes with full VoIP protocol support, including SIPv2, SIPv2 over TLS, T.38, G.722 HD voice, RTP security with SRTP, fax and modem bypass, DTMF relay.

When it comes to administrative controls, the Patton WebWizard provides fast installation with a HTTPS zero touch provisioning, SNMP, command line interface, and an automated mass provisioning for large-scale deployments.
