VoIP Equipment IP Set Top Boxes Experience Sales Growth

By Calvin Azuri, TMCnet Contributor

New video services that require new IP set top boxes (STB) are being added by telcos in the highly competitive pay TV services market. The growth of the IP set top market in the next few years will be strongly contributed with the addition of more HD channels and Over-the-Top or OTT video services. This information has been provided by In-Stat.

In a press release, Michelle Abraham, industry analyst for In-Stat (News - Alert), said, "Since telcos in most geographic regions have significant competitors for TV services, many are working in concert with set top box manufacturers to develop new boxes. Vendors are also enhancing their STBs to make installation and remote management of boxes easier for telcos."

According to the research study by In-Stat, 24 percent growth in 2010 is expected for the IP set top box market. The top company in 2009 was Motorola (News - Alert) with a market share of 27 percent. As per the research, with ADB buying Pirelli in 2010, some vendor consolidation is taking place.

Over the forecast period, the strongest growth will be seen by the North American market. The Middle East/Africa and Latin America regions are excluded as they are growing from a small base. As many SoCs have already eliminated other discrete ICs, slower price erosion on the set top box silicon is expected by In-Stat.

The set top box market including terrestrial, satellite, cable, and IP set top boxes is continuously researched by In-Stat. The latest research by In-Stat is titled ‘Worldwide IP Set Top Boxes: Moving Beyond the Telco’. Telcos deploy their managed IPTV (News - Alert) services for delivery of the video to the TV set with the help of IP set top boxes.

Region-wise forecasts through 2014 for worldwide IP STP unit shipment and revenue are included in the research. For 2008 and 2009, worldwide IP STB shipments by vendors are also included. The research includes region-wise worldwide IP STB Average Selling Prices. The profiles of key vendors are also included in the research. These include ADB, Amino, Cisco, Entone, Motorola, Netgem, Pace, Sagemcom, Samsung (News - Alert), Technicolor, and others. New IP STB features are explored. The research also provides information on Semiconductor Bill-of-Materials and Total Available Market.
