Companies Still Hesitant About Implementing VoIP Solutions

At Internet Telephony Conference and Expo East, held in Fort Lauderdale in January, Xelor Software conducted its third survey soliciting respondents’ thoughts on the reliability of IP telephony.

The results, announced yesterday by Xelor, ring true with the previous two studies: The majority of conference attendees continue to have concerns over the reliability of IP telephony. The survey recorded the opinions of both enterprise IT and channel sales professionals who attended the conference.

The majority of conference attendees are searching for an effective Quality of Service (QoS) solution to ensure the reliability of their IP telephony (IPT) deployments. In fact, over the two surveys conducted at Internet Telephony Conference and Expo, more than half of the respondents say their firms have deployed 100 or fewer endpoints, and the leading reasons for not adopting yet are that there are reliability questions and people are still waiting for the market to mature.

As might be expected, even firms implementing VoIP solutions are being cautious and are evaluating the systems before venturing into full-blown deployments. Most also have not deploying more than 100 endpoints, say 60% of survey respondents.

“The desire for IP telephony to match the performance of traditional circuit-switched systems has been apparent throughout the last three surveys,” said Steven Guthrie, vice president of marketing at Xelor Software. “We believe that IPT won’t be fully adopted until the quality issues are resolved with an easy-to-implement solution.”

Xelor’s XelorRate Service Quality Manager software is one product companies investing in IP telephony systems can explore. As for systems that are being deployed, the most frequently deployed systems come from Cisco and Avaya. That, however, might not be entirely unexpected, for given that fact that companies appear to be hesitant about the technology, it follows that those that do venture into this new (and exciting) space will do so with two of the largest and most popular brands in the market.
