What You Should Know About VoIP Security

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

As VoIP continues to grow and take on a major share of the telephony marketplace, the threats associated with the technology like eavesdropping, toll-fraud, denial-of-service attacks and others, are also increasing in concern.

Because so much information is being transmitted and held on IP connected networks, a threat to one technology can have an effect on others. For example, an attack using VoIP vulnerability on a soft-phone could be used as a vector to insert malicious content to extract other information stored on the PC.

For businesses, this concern is also great as IP networks are part of their core infrastructure. An attack can take down more than just PCs - it can take phone systems down at the same time. So, if businesses lose the network, they also lose business.

VoIP security is vital in combating these threats. To get the inside scoop on some of the techniques for providing a secure foundation for VoIP communications and the real level of threat to VoIP in today's environment, be sure to check out Mark Fawcett, Head of Global Professional Services at Aculab (News - Alert) as he presents "An Introduction to VoIP Security" at the upcoming INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & EXPO happening in Los Angeles, California, September 16-18, 2008.

This session will take place on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 from  2:45-3:30PM and will provide attendees with an introduction to various critical VoIP security topics, starting with the basics of digital data encryption and its use in real-time media environments. The discussion will also include a discussion of the risks, threats and vulnerabilities, and will cover such essential technologies such as SecureRTP (SRTP), secure signaling (SIPS), IPsec, HMAC/SHA-1 and MIKEY.

Mark Fawcett is Head of Aculab's Global Professional Services team. He has over 18 years experience in designing communications systems ranging from RF to IP, and all roads in between, with 16 of those years spent developing highly secure, mission-critical communications platforms for the U.K. Government.
