Aculab's Prosody X Delivers Strong Conferencing Capabilities

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Aculab (News - Alert), a provider of enabling technology products, was recently charged with the challenge of providing a pioneer in the reservation-less telephone conferencing business with a solution that would enhance their service with a wideband voice conferencing feature.

Based on Aculab’s award-winning enabling technology products, these technology enhancements enabled to client to deliver a more reliable, scalable, user friendly and cost effective conferencing service.

The client was seeking a wideband voice conferencing feature as the newest voice compression technology – the transmission of double the bandwidth of the audio spectrum when compared to the traditional analog, digital and IP telephony – delivers a superior voice quality that is truly noticeable to the human ear.

The major technical requirement presented by the client was the development of a new conferencing algorithm to operate on a set of Aculab’s media processing platforms. This algorithm was expected to provide a wideband matrix conferencing facility with an unlimited number of participants in a single voice conference.

The client also required the ability to seamlessly mix voice streams originating from both wideband and narrowband endpoints. In addition, a full set of essential conferencing features had to be supported in a wideband variant and the vendor must be able to provide an additional set of generic media processing functions.

A final requirement included integration of a new wideband speech codec, iSAC, initially developed by a 3rd party. Aculab’s experience in integration of numerous VoIP and mobile voice codecs helped in this process, although it still required a special expertise and deep knowledge of the DSP technology.

Aculab presented the new Prosody X architecture with its comprehensive base feature set as the perfect solution. The solution was presented as the ideal choice as it offered media processing platform for IP applications design and high density narrowband conferencing functionality as a standard option.

The Prosody X solution had been designed to enable Aculab to quickly react to a dynamic market and the client was ideally placed to help fine tune its feature development.

Following the initial delivery of the Prosody X, Aculab was actively involved in supporting the client in order to develop and integrate its service platform application with Aculab’s software and APIs.

The client is now relying on Prosody X to provide industry leading conferencing capabilities. The solution is scalable, redundant and offers high density and more than 225 wideband iSAC encoded streams mixed per single board and over 4000 per CompactPCI (News - Alert) chassis. As a result, the client is enjoying the ability to provide a top-grade conferencing service with minimal operational cost.

Aculab is setting itself apart in the industry with its commitment to tailored software development and technical support as a key supplier of specialist, DSP-based media processing and signaling protocols. The company has proven that it is ready to invest the time and resources necessary into developing innovative services that will add value and provide customers with the opportunity to deliver on the promises of wideband conferencing.
