Sonus and Cantata to Deliver IMS-Ready Applications and Services

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

VoIP technology provider Sonus Networks has joined forces with Cantata Technology in order to deliver IMS-ready applications and services to network operators.

Specifically, the new partnership calls for Sonus and Cantata to integrate Cantata's SnowShore IP Media Server with Sonus’ IMS-ready architecture to perform the Media Resource Function (MRF) and ease the delivery of subscriber-focused services and applications for better communications.

Sonus’ chief marketing officer Steve Edwards values the power of integrating various communications methods in order to fuel the development of the next generation in telephony services. “The next generation of telephony is centered on enabling the integration of multiple ways of communicating,” he said in a statement released on Tuesday. “Our partnership with Cantata empowers network operators to start moving towards an IMS application infrastructure, while delivering immediate value through enhanced services today.”

The integration of Sonus’ ASX Feature Server and IMX Multimedia Application Platform with Cantata’s SnowShore IP Media Server will allow network operators a way to deliver SIP and VoiceXML-based applications through multimedia processing.

“Our partnership with Sonus combines the power of their industry-leading IMS-ready architecture with Cantata’s market-leading software-based media server,” said Cantata’s vice president of marketing Peter Vescuso. “By working together to pioneer the development of next generation voice services, we’re providing the tools our customers need to differentiate themselves in an increasingly competitive market and to respond to the consumer demand for communications services that are exciting and useful.”

Today’s news follows Sonus’ announcement last month about it being tapped by Cable & Wireless as its supplier of its next-generation IP-voice network. The deal would allow Cable & Wireless to deploy an IP-voice network, which would deliver primary line local, long-distance and international telephony service.

Cable & Wireless operates in 34 countries around the world, including 14 islands in the Caribbean. Through this partnership, the company would initially deploy its Sonus-based network to support the Caribbean Islands and Bermuda. In select markets, Cable & Wireless plans to eventually replace its infrastructure with Sonus’ IMS-ready access system.

Specifically, Cable & Wireless plans to deploy a complete suite of Sonus' IMS-ready systems including both the GSX9000 and GSX4000 Open Services Switch, the PSX Call Routing Server, the ASX Access Server, the Network Border Switch for IP-to-IP peering and security, and the Sonus Insight Management System for advanced OSS and billing support.
