Gold Line Taps Sonus to Support Pre-Paid Phone Service

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

VoIP service supplier Sonus Networks announced today that Group of Gold Line (Gold Line), a prepaid long distance calling card provider in Canada, has deployed a suite of Sonus' IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert) (IMS)-ready systems to support its Gold Line's prepaid, private label and promotional calling cards.

Sonus will enable Gold Line to upkeep its distribution agreement with Western Union, Canada Post, Mac's stores, 7-Eleven, CIBC ATM, Shell, Petro Canada, Esso and over 100,000 independent outlets across North America to carry its CiCi Phone Card (CiCi), and/or co-branded calling card programs and increase its distribution channels across Canada.

"Our goal is to make communications services readily accessible, particularly to newcomers to various regions, who are frequently reliant on pre-paid services," said Gold Line's chief technology officer Vivian Clark in a statement. "Gold Line is committed to continuing its legacy of offering low cost, superior quality long distance voice service, and Sonus, which has industry's most robust, scalable, and secure platform, allows us to do just that."

Gold Line chose Sonus' IMS-ready GSX9000 Open Services Switch, the PSX Call Routing Server and the Sonus Insight Management System. Gold Line will also deploy Sonus' Network Border Switch (NBS), which combines session control, PSTN gateway services and security into a single carrier-class system.

"Gold Line's range of prepaid calling card services offers end users the flexibility that characterizes today's communications landscape, while their private label and promotional calling cards offer businesses unique branding opportunities," noted Hassan Ahmed, chairman and CEO, Sonus Networks (News - Alert). "With a complete IMS-ready architecture and a broad range of services from its OSPA, Sonus delivers a total solution for addressing this burgeoning market."

The Sonus-based Gold Line network began to carry live traffic last month.

Sonus made news last month when it announced that European VoIP provider Telio selected its IMS-ready system as the foundation for the company's IP-based voice network. Telio offers primary line residential services throughout Europe. According to Sonus' news release, Telio selected Sonus because it meets European-specific signaling requirements. Sonus also supports Telio's plug-and-play IP-based voice service, which currently carries more than 100 million minutes of voice traffic per month.
