Telecom operators now have to deliver a wide range of services in order to compete with the communications options customers have at their disposal from OTTs and other non-traditional providers. This requires innovative solutions and the technology to make it possible. The certification of Patton's SmartNode enterprise session border controllers (eSBCs) with Telenor's IPT MBN SIP trunking service means organizations can connect their existing ISDN or DECT PBX phone systems to Telenor’s IP telephony service.

Telenor is a Norwegian multinational telecommunications company in 13 markets and 208 million mobile subscribers with tele, data and media communication services.

By certifying Patton's eSBCs, customers with ISDN will be able to transition to next-generation communications solutions without the high capital expenditure to make it possible. The SIP-to-SIP architecture Telenor will make available with its SIP-trunk service, which is branded Internet Protocol Telephony Mobile Business Network (IPT MBN) will deliver interoperability with the solutions from both companies.

This interoperability was tested by Telenor using Patton's SmartNode 5530 (BRI) and SmartNode 5570 (PRI) eSBCs—running version 3.8.2 of Patton’s Trinity operating system with version 11.0.158 of Telenor’s IPT MBN SIP-trunking service.

"Patton represents a valuable contribution integrating both legacy PSTN and SIP environments to the Telenor IMS infrastructure. We are delighted to add Patton PRI and BRI eSBCs to our approved CPE solutions portfolio," said Øystein Hem, Director of Product Development and Marketing, B2B Fixed, Telenor Norway.

The Patton SmartNode 5530 delivers high voice quality with transcoding for up to 4 SIP-to-SIP calls, QoS, and high-definition G.722 codec support with secure encryption. The security features include SIP TLS, SRTP, Stateful Firewall and secure provisioning to protect the LAN networks from fraudulent attacks initiated using the Internet.

This platform also has full telephony features with flexible call routing and numbering plan adaptations, CLIP/CLIR, hold, transfer, 3-way conferencing and more. Administrators have access to management and provisioning controls with web-based interfaces for secure configuration and software upgrades.

"Our Telenor-certified eSBC solutions make the latest All-IP services readily accessible to enterprises of all sizes—while preserving their investments in existing ISDN business phone systems," said Peter Burkhalter, CEO at Patton-Inalp.
