Testing IP Services Report: Mu Dynamics Earns 'Top Product' Distinction

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

IP services testing provider Mu Dynamics today announced that SC Magazine has designated Mu’s Test Suite as one of its “Top 20 Products in Last 20 Years.”

In determining recipients of the ‘Top 20 Products in the Last 20 Years’ honors, SC Magazine Technology Editor and Norwich University Chief Information Security Officer Peter Stephenson said there’s been an evolution in security products over the last 20 years. And Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Mu Dynamics’ (News - Alert) testing suite embodies many of the positive aspects of this evolution, Stephenson said.

In October, Mu Dynamics announced new testing capabilities for its test suite, to help customers meet key requirements of IP service testing regardless of their specific customer ecosystem – telecom, smart grid, mobile operator or even cloud computing.

With these new and expanded capabilities, Mu aims to sell what company execs refer to as the industry’s only integrated solution to quickly and cost effectively address the key requirements of IP service testing regardless of the specific customer ecosystem.

The refined testing methods are designed to test more accurately the actual services that need testing. The spruced-up Suite obtains a better sampling of IP service traffic – or test cases built from vendors and operators IP service traffic – which expedites both the testing time and the respective products’ time to market at a higher level of quality and lower total expense.

The power and flexibility of the Mu’s test suite rapidly tests any IP service or product by using existing customer scripts, or joining the thousands of users leveraging community content from pcapr.net site as the basis for testing, according to Stephenson.

“Just when we think we’ve exhausted the value of the Mu, our teams find something new and exciting to test that addresses the needs of my Norwich staff, students and SC Magazine reviewers,” Stephenson said. “These capabilities include test automation, customization and the ability to emulate the logic of the IP service under test. The team at Mu has consistently incorporated our product feedback and enabled multiple aspects of resilience and security testing, while giving our teams an ability to test in ways we could only dream of before.”

Adam Stein (News - Alert), vice president of marketing at Mu Dynamics, praised the magazine’s recognition as further validation of the Mu Test Suite’s value.

“Our success as a company is a direct result of our partnership with our customers, and by focusing technical innovation on the challenges we see our operator and vendor users trying to overcome,” Stein said.

According to Mu, the test suite is designed to help operators by doing a number of things, such as:

  • Accurately emulating the logic of the IP service to provide thorough testing of the actual service -- not just individually testing the underlying components
  • Driving multiple types of data by sampling IP service traffic including customer content, Mu content and/or third-party content (for example, Mu’s PCAPr site: www.pcapr.net) in order to accurately emulate system behavior
  • Enabling multiple aspects of testing including “Functional,” “Interoperability,” “Resilience” and “Security” in a single platform so work done by customers can be leveraged across testing disciplines.

This recognition is the latest in a long list of the more than 25 honors and awards Mu has earned over the last four years from such authorities as Frost & Sullivan, IDC, Infoworld, Internet Telephony, Network World (News - Alert), Red Herring and SC Magazine.
