Telepresence Vendor BrightCom Teams with Skype to Broaden Reach

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

Brightcom, a Huntington Beach, Calif.-based provider of integrated telepresence and video conferencing solutions, today announced plans to link Skype’s clients to its SIP telepresence and video conferencing infrastructure, "Visual Collaboration System in 2010."

The collaboration between Skype (News - Alert) clients and BrightCom telepresence conferencing is designed to help people without high-end conferencing endpoints communicate with those in personal offices, conference rooms, telepresence suites and custom telepresence workstations around the world, BrightCom officials said.

BrightCom’s Visual Collaboration System is a single network appliance that offers meeting scheduling, Web conferencing capabilities and NAT/firewall traversal for BrightCom’s Lumina Telepresence, ClearView Video Conferencing and desktop conferencing endpoints. It also lets meeting participants pass control of the meeting, remote control another user’s desktop and markup shared documents, images and video clips.

With the use of SIP, Lumina Telepresence (News - Alert), ClearView Room, cart and desktop conferencing endpoints can connect to Skype users anywhere, allowing instant collaboration, expert advice and decision-making, company officials said. VCS also helps participants login to view conferences via a Web-based environment.

“BrightCom is very excited to be a part of the Skype for SIP program,” Bob McCandless, CEO of BrightCom, told TMCnet. “This will greatly affect the telepresence industry as it expands the number of people and connections of their ideas and thoughts. Business will ultimately benefit the most, allowing participants in conference rooms and telepresence suites to reach out to co-workers, customers and experts instantly making for effective decision-making, productivity and collaboration.”

The first phase of BrightCom’s VCS integration with Skype for SIP will be audio integration for free in 2010, BrightCom said.

Skype for SIP, which launched earlier this year, lets IP-based PBX (News - Alert) owners place low-cost calls to fixed and mobile phones around the world, and receive inbound calls directly into their PBX system through SIP-enabled UC systems from Skype’s 481 million users. SIP trunking is a service offered by Internet telephony service providers that lets businesses adopt VoIP using their Internet connection. The technology lets them communicate with others who rely on the PSTN.
