TEMIA Releases Paper on Inventory Management Using TEM Metrics

By Trupti Kamath, TMCnet Contributor

The Telecom Expense Management Industry Association (TEMIA (News - Alert)), the authoritative voice for the telecom expense management (TEM) industry, published a report titled "Best Practices for Inventory Management Using TEM Metrics to Improve Performance."

This report balances two different approaches to implementing TEM programs. One approach focuses on building an inventory first before processing invoices. The other approach begins with processing the invoices and then building the inventory working from the invoices. Both approaches have benefits.

Larry Foster, vice president and general manager for PAETEC (News - Alert) Software Corporation, a division of PAETEC stated: "TEMIA's educational initiatives and focus on publishing Best Practices and developing KPIs demonstrates how TEM companies can influence the industry for the betterment of our clients. TEMIA is poised to build upon the successes we have achieved and help our clients' maximize their investments by streamlining their relationships with their technology supply partner."

Larry Foster also serves as president of TEMIA and chairman for the committee that focuses on standards, KPIs, metrics, and benchmarks.

TEMIA is developing a series of papers on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), benchmarks and standards written for enterprises, government, TEM suppliers, and other organizations. Membership to TEMIA has been expanding since the time it was launched in 2007, and the latest entrantinto this organization is Tellennium Group.

Pankaj Gupta, president and CEO of Amtel (News - Alert), INC said: "For a successful TEM implementation, building a clean inventory is a critical element. Our clients achieve the highest ROI when the service elements in the inventory are correlated with the invoices and the contracts. Building detailed inventory is a time-consuming exercise but it brings transparency into the network, helping in cost reduction."

It is important to avoid paralysis waiting for a comprehensive inventory before moving forward with the TEM program.

"At TnT, we have always emphasized that enterprises cannot manage their expenses properly without managing their inventory. Without an accurate inventory, enterprises may not have a clear accounting of what they are paying for and if they should even be paying for it. We believe Inventory management and control is the foundation of any TEM program and endorse this white paper on this topic," Tony Bodetti, chief operating officer for TnT Expense Management (News - Alert) said.

In the time that it takes to build a comprehensive inventory, there will be Move, Add, Change, and Disconnect (MACD) activity. The TEM program can track this activity while the inventory is being built to help ensure the final inventory is current. Also, if the enterprise delays selection of the TEM program or it waits for an inventory to be built, it will forfeit savings that could have been achieved while the inventory was being built, according to TEMIA officials.
