Telecom Cost Management: Helping Companies 'Find' Money

By Amy Tierney, TMCnet Web Editor

Even during an economic recession, enterprises are investing in the investigation new technologies and ways to improve their telecom and networking infrastructures. However, when it comes to actually spending the money to deploy new technology, many companies are holding back.

“Finding additional funds to dedicate to new technology, telecom, or network spending is a complete non-starter right now,” Russ Maney (News - Alert), principal and co-founder of Xponential Group, a technology procurement services firm, told TMCnet in an interview. “Funding new projects using existing budgets is also proving to be very difficult, especially when companies are looking to cut spending wherever they can.”

So, since nearly all companies are facing financial pressures, the Louisville, Ky.-based company is steering independent agents, systems integrators, VARs, and consultants, as well as many of their, clients to contract a telecom process management and consulting firm to “find” money in existing telecom budgets.

The Tellennium Group helps enterprise-level organizations evaluate and implement technologies, audit invoices, manage expenses and improve overall productivity and efficiency through its Integrated Telecom Management solutions. The company has recently been listed by Inc. Magazine one of the top 40 fastest-growing telecom companies in the United States.

And, the company’s results show. According to Maney, whose firm recommends Tellennium, clients see on average a 28 percent expense reduction in their total telecom budgets.

“For a company that spends $50,000/month on telecom, that’s an annual savings of $168,000 per year, Maney said.

For example, Tellennium Fulbright & Jaworski, a full-service international law firm, consolidate its telecom bills from various providers. The firm, which has nearly 1,000 lawyers spread across 50 practice areas and six nations, wanted an easy solution to keep all telecom-related invoices organized and paid on time. For a large law company with a national or international reach, decentralized telecom management can be costly.

So, Tellennium deployed its “Telefficiency Integrated Management System” or “TIMS” and now manages Fulbright & Jaworski's telecommunications billing, usage, inventory, services, and contract negotiations. As a result, in the last two years Tellennium is credited with capturing more than $300,000 in savings and credits for Fulbright & Jaworski.

What are some companies doing with their new-found money? Some firms will want to just let these savings fall straight to their bottom lines, versus investing in new technologies or upgrading their telecom and networking infrastructures. But, if an independent telecom agent, systems integrator, VAR, or consultant can link a relationship with Tellennium to a positive ROI telecom project, then they have the potential to propose a combination that improves a client’s telecom, without increasing its overall telecom budget, but that still delivers a positive ROI.

“That’s a powerful combination, especially in today’s economic environment,” Maney said.
