Speech Recognition and Text to Speech Comes to Manhattan

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

In response to a growing demand for their speech products in the North American market, speech technology provider Loquendo (News - Alert) has announced the opening of new offices on Fifth Avenue in New York City.

The new NYC offices will become the company's operational base for the North American markets and will help to strengthen the company's presence on the East Coast.

Headquartered in Turin, Italy, Loquendo is a Telecom Italia (News - Alert) company. Their new U.S. offices are located in Sparkle’s American headquarters on the 27th floor at 745, Fifth Avenue. Sparkle American is a global connectivity and service provider of the Telecom Italia Group.

Loquendo offers a number of languages and voices with more always in development. These include: U.S. and U.K. English, Canadian French, French, American Spanish, Mexican, Chilean and Argentinean Spanish, Castilian, Catalan, Valencian, Galician, Brazilian, Portuguese, Italian, Esperanto, German, Dutch, Greek, Mandarin Chinese, Swedish, Turkish, and Polish in both male and female voices.

For the North American market, Loquendo offers four languages and nine voices to provide their customers with reach across the entire region. This includes 4 U.S. English voices, 2 two French Canadian voices, 2 American Spanish voices and one Mexican voice.

Also, the company has said they will release an additional American English voice this summer.

Last month, Loquendo made headlines when its TTS technology was used to power a new voice- controlled oven from Indesit Company.

The prototype of the voice-controlled oven, Sophius, makes use of Loquendo TTS and Amuser, a multimedia solutions provider, to allow users to interact with the oven using their natural voice to command Sophius on the temperature and cooking time. For example, "Cook pizza at 180 degrees for 20 minutes."
