Sprint's Speech-Enabled Mobile Systems Ease Access to Patient Data

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sprint (News - Alert) has reportedly joined forces with Vocera and Nuance Communications to offer speech-enabled mobile systems for hospitals, clinics and other health service groups to aid in streamlining operations by accelerate access to information and improving patient care.

Information which was only previously available within the walls of hospitals is now available for viewing remotely, in real-time on Sprint smartphones. Sprint and Vocera have teamed to extend Vocera's communications system to Wide Area Networks (WAN) by offering key Vocera functions on Sprint and Nextel handsets operating on both the Nationwide Sprint PCS Network and the Nextel National Network.

The move will enable mobile workers such as physicians, nurses and the hospital staff to communicate instantly with each other beyond the hospital setting wearing Vocera badges by using the walkie-talkie feature on their Sprint and Nextel handsets.

“Working with industry leaders like Sprint enables us to provide innovative solutions to help advance and streamline hospital communication, which can help expedite patient care,” commented Vocera Communications' executive vice president Brent Lang in a statement. “Extending Vocera’s reach to the WAN through integration with Sprint enables greater flexibility and connectivity among hospital staff, allowing them to concentrate on providing high-quality patient care at the point-of-care.”

Sprint joined forces with Nuance (News - Alert) to launch a custom speech-enabled healthcare voice technology which enables healthcare staff to have wireless voice access to data including medical records. The new speech-enabled technology allows physicians to access current patient info such as medication, lab results and patient status directly on their Sprint handheld devices, both inside and outside the hospital.

“Nuance’s expanded relationship with Sprint reflects the ongoing demand for speech solutions within the large and rapidly growing healthcare vertical,” said Michael Thompson, vice president and general manager, telco, search and communications, Nuance. “We are working with Sprint, an industry leader in providing mobility solutions, to deliver mobile access to pertinent hospital information through natural spoken commands. Solutions such as these help healthcare organizations increase productivity, improve the quality of healthcare and reduce operating costs.”

Today’s news follows Sprint’s announcement about it enhancing a long-standing partnership with Orange Business Services by increasing the suite of services to include IP/MPLS capabilities in additional areas worldwide, specially throughout Europe and Asia. Sprint's MPLS VPN SLAs now apply to network connectivity with Orange, as well as other similar global partners. Sprint Global MPLS VPN service allows businesses to converge data, voice, and video on a single network platform.
