TMC’s (News - Alert) President and publisher Rich Tehrani had the opportunity to speak with 8x8 VP of Sales & marketing Huw Rees a couple of weeks ago at ITEXPO, and this conversation has been turned into a podcast right here on TMCnet.
During the podcast, Rees discussed the more than 10,000 business customers that now subscribe to 8x8’s (News - Alert) VirtualOffice Hosted PBX service. Rees revealed that the average business buys 7.5 services from his company, which might partly explain the terrific quarter it had, showing record revenue of $15.8 million.
The new Packet8 Mobile Talk service is the first 8x8 mobile VoIP offering, designed for use on smart phone. According to Rees Mobile Talk offers significant savings on international calls compared to AT&T, Verizon (News - Alert) and the like. By using the Packet8 cell network to complete calls, rates drop from the standard $1.50 per minute to Packet8’s rate of 2-3 cents per minute.
Rees also talked about the involvement of 8x8 CEO Brian Martin, with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s recent initiative to map how broadband was being used throughout the state. That initiative found that 96% of California has had access to broadband, but only 50% subscribe. Rees stressed importance of encouraging more people with access to use broadband.
