XMediusFax 7.5 is Sagemcom's Latest Fax over IP Release

By Joe Rizzo, TMCnet Contributing Writer

Sagemcom (News - Alert) is a French technology group known worldwide. Sagemcom’s goal is to become a world leader in broadband terminals, convergence and energy solutions. It was formerly the communications branch of SAGEM. Sagemcom is now a private independent group held by the Carlyle Group, as well as employees.

Sagemcom operates on the broadband (digital home, set-top boxes, Internet routers, telephony and multimedia terminals), telecoms and energy (smartgrid and energy management) and document management (printing terminals, software and solutions, digital production workflow) markets.

Sagemcom has a new version of it fax over IP (FoIP) product. The company is a global leader in advanced IP fax server solutions. In fact, it has supported the T.38 FoIP since 2002. On November 19, 2013 Sagemcom announced the release of XMediusFax 7.5.

XMediusFAX is now able to transmit faxes with the G.711 Pass-through with Encrypted Fax Transmission protocol (SRTP). This is in addition of its interoperability with the T.38 Fax Relay. The latest 7.5 release of XMediusFAX also offers new eCopy ShareScan and Sharp (News - Alert) OSA XMediusFAX connectors for Multifunction Devices (MFDs).

T.38 fax relay is an ITU-T recommendation that allows for fax data to be carried over IP networks. Data is transmitted directly in T.38 without being converted to an audio stream. This results in a significant reduction in the bandwidth needed. T.38 also supports data and controls redundancy to mitigate the effects of packet loss.G.711 is an ITU-T recommendation for Pulse (News - Alert) Code Modulation (PCM) of voice frequencies. It uses an uncompressed format and requires high bandwidth, typically about 64 kbps. Using G.711 as the transport method for FoIP is an extension of traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN) audio-based faxing. The digital fax data is converted to a PCM audio stream and then sent as G.711 Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) packets.

XMediusFAX’s eCopy Connector allows users to effortlessly fax paper documents directly from an eCopy-enabled scanning device. It converts paper documents into electronic copies. The XMediusFAX Sharp OSA Connector integrates with Sharp Digital Imager MPDs. This gives users convenient access to faxing capabilities on the same devices used for printing, scanning and copying.

Jean Champagne (News - Alert), who is the general manager of Sagemcom Canada, said “In addition to the T.38 Fax Relay supported since 2002, we are very pleased to offer our partners and customers the option of transporting faxes using the G.711 Pass-through, making XMediusFAX interoperable with all IP gateways. Like all our previous software releases we based our features and enhancements on the feedback of our most important resource - our partners and customers.”

The XMediusFAX Sharp OSA and eCopy ShareScan connectors (on MFDs) are now available in 7 languages. The are, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Russian.
