Benefits of Integrating IP Fax as a Branch Application using Cisco UCS Express and SRE-V

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

IP fax provider Sagemcom was recently on the floor at Cisco (News - Alert) Live 2011 in Las Vegas, where company executives had the opportunity to sit down and talk to John Voss, Solution Product Manager for the Cisco UCS Express and Application eXtension Platform.

Voss touched on a number of subjects, including the Cisco UCS Express and SRE-V platforms and the benefits of integrating IP fax in a corporate branch network.

He believes that IP fax is an ideal branch application for Cisco UCS Express and SRE-V because it consolidates fax on one device, eliminating the need to purchase and manage dedicated servers with fax boards.

As Voss explains, all users need to do to integrate fax as a branch application is load the UCS Express software on a service ready engine blade, drop Sagemcom’s XMediusFAX software into the environment, and then utilize the analog-to-digital conversion in the IRS G2 (News - Alert) router.

“It really simplifies deployment of distributed fax capabilities in all your branch environments, so you don’t have to worry about maintaining analog lines or complex and expensive hardware,” he said.

Voss also commented on the survivability of Cisco UCS Express, an attribute that enables end users to send IP faxes even if there is an issue with the wide area network (WAN).

This feature also allows companies that need to comply with various regulations and compliances – such as PCI (News - Alert) or HIPPA – to keep their data on their local area network (LAN), rather than centralizing it on the WAN level.

Voss wrapped up the interview by discussing the role that Cisco UCS Express plays in the Software as a Service (SaaS (News - Alert)) business model, which many service providers and MSPs are employing to increase profit margins and broaden their offerings.

For service providers, UCS Express is an ideal service-ready platform for deploying fax in distributed environments without having to manage complex hardware configurations, says Voss.
