Session Border Controller Architecture Streamlined by Mid-Size European Telecom Vendor

By David Sims, TMCnet Contributing Editor

A mid-size European telecom vendor, providing convergence equipment for Carrier-grade VoIP networks, had a challenge: to pace with continuously evolving requirements. This is imperative, because the Session Border Controller (SBC) technology is relatively new, and all aspects have not yet been standardized.

So to achieve high performance levels on a single processor while ensuring interoperability with network nodes in a live network, the challenge was that these standards are still being developed for SBC operations, and call flows and all the interfaces are still not standardized.

So Aricent (News - Alert) worked with the client to design the product based on the MIDCOM architecture. The scope of the project included extensive code optimization and porting of Aricent’s products, Aricent officials said, such as the performance-optimized SIP User Agent and MEGACO Toolkit, “which helped the client achieve high performance levels.”

In addition, Aricent executed what company officials say was “complete interoperability testing for the product with live network nodes.”

Some of the project components delivered by Aricent were finalizing the overall requirements and the architecture, designing, coding, and testing the Signaling Proxy as well as placing the overall solution in the OEM's platform.

Aricent also worked on enabling the product for carriers’ requirements, and helping in interoperability with different user and call agents, along with jointly working with the OEM to evolve a scalable architecture.

Aricent executed this project in a fixed-price model, company officials say, which meant that “the timeliness and the quality of deliverables were ensured as a part of the business model. In fact, if Aricent officials do say so themselves, “few telecom software vendors have the capability to execute a project of this complexity in a fixed-price/fixed-time model.”

Aricent’s expertise in VoIP (and with the SIP domain in particular) was cited by the European client as a factor which helped the client finalize design and the architecture details for the Media as well as the Signaling Plane of the session border controller.

“Overall,” Aricent officials say, “the client gained tremendously in terms of an accelerated product rollout, which has helped it retain the early mover advantage in the fast growing market for this product.”
