SUPERCOMM Watch: Netrake Launches Security Gateway for UMA WLAN

BY JOHANNE TORRES

On a special edition of VoIP Minute Watch this week Ill be covering announcements and other happenings from the exhibitors at the SUPERCOMM show in Chicago, taking place at McCormick Place in the windy city.

Plano, TX-based Netrake is leading way this morning with product announcements for WLAN made at the SUPERCOMM show in Chicago. The company is currently showcasing its new addition to the nCite security products portfolio: the nCite Security Gateway.

The new Security Gateway, the company explained, was designed to address the security requirements of wireless carriers, specifically GSM networks, looking to extend capabilities into unlicensed mobile access or 802.xx networks. The Gateway supports a pre-IMS market opportunity that could create 30-50 million VoIP endpoints available by 2008.

The company highlighted the multimode handset, which combines a GSM phone and a VoIP endpoint as key enabler of the expansion announced today. The VoIP endpoint requires a security association to the core network in order to preserve privacy, integrity and assurance. The Netrake Security Gateway provides this security association for both signaling and media using IPSec encryption.

"The nCite Security Gateway is designed to meet UMA requirements as well as 3GPP and 3GPP2 requirements for evolution to IMS networks," said Bruce Hill, CEO of Netrake. "Multimode convergence is rapidly gaining momentum in both wireless carriers and broadband ISPs. Service providers who use multimode endpoints leverage their existing subscriber base and infrastructure. This brings significant economies of scale and scope to the market that will result in rapid growth."

The nCite Security Gateway offers multi-layer security management for wireless carriers, ensuring IP Communications integrity between user endpoints, network elements and carrier networks. These include: Network Layer Security Association (IPSec); Application Layer Security Association (TLS); and Session Layer Security Association (SBC).
