It’s easy to get caught up in SASE excitement, but don’t sleep on SD-WAN. SD-WAN serves as the cloud onramp, and with digital transformation being a when, not if proposition, adoption is on the rise.

Dell’ (News - Alert)Oro Group released its 2Q 2021 SD-WAN Report, with some predictable results, as the top six SD-WAN vendors are responsible for 70 percent market share.

The SD-WAN market saw nearly 40 percent growth in the first half of 2021 compared to 2020. Cisco earned the crown as revenue share leader, with Fortinet (News - Alert) finding its way into second and VMware, Versa and HPE Aruba taking third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The report highlighted vendors leveraging security functionality to separate from the pack, and noted a dip in hardware-based Access Routers, which confirmed a general shift toward software-based SD-WAN solutions.

"Demand for SD-WAN solutions was robust in the first half of the year, sustaining the momentum we saw at the backend of last year," said Shin Umeda, Vice President at Dell'Oro Group. "The SD-WAN market continues to expand globally, and while all regions posted solid double-digit growth, uptake in Europe and Asia was especially strong," added Umeda.

Software is certainly eating the world, like Pac-Man gobbling ghosts and chomping on cherries. SD-WAN plays a pivotal role in the feast.
