Telco Systems, Silver Peak Offer Open vCPE Solution for SD-WAN

May 03, 2017

Virtual Customer Premises Equipment (vCPE) is following the trend in IT of moving away from hardware-based operations into virtual, software-based functions. This means solutions that used to rely on dedicated hardware can move to virtual, software-based functions for CPEs such as routers, firewalls, VPNs and Network Address Translation (NAT). So the announcement by Telco Systems (News - Alert) and Silver Peak of their joint Open vCPE managed SD-WAN services shouldn't come as a total surprise, but the integration of both technologies will give service providers more flexibility for virtualized services.

The Open vCPE part of the joint solution is being delivered by Telco Systems, a provider of carrier Ethernet and MPLS-based demarcation, aggregation, NFV and vCPE solutions. The company gives service providers tools for creating networks for mobile backhaul, business services and cloud networking that are intelligent, service-assured and CE 2.0-compliant. Telco Systems has innovative solutions that let service providers be more flexible in a telecommunications market that is always evolving.

This is one of the reasons the integration with Silver Peak (News - Alert)'s SD-WAN solution makes a lot of sense. Shayne Stubbs, Vice President Service Providers and Cloud at Silver Peak, explained it this way: “The Silver Peak partnership with Telco Systems underscores the value of combining a best in class CPE virtualization platform with a complete SD-WAN software solution, bringing the future of managed business services to telcos and service providers today. Our collaboration with Telco Systems expands our market reach and allows us to better serve our telco and managed service provider customers by offering our award winning SD-WAN solution as a turnkey VNF service.”

The technologies that will be part of this joint effort are the Silver Peak Unity EdgeConnectSP virtual SD-WAN solution along with Telco Systems' Verge, an open, service-ready, plug-and-play vCPE based on industry standard x86 hardware platforms that is part of the company's new NFVTime suite.

With the new joint Open vCPE SD-WAN solution, telcos and managed service providers will be able to fully leverage the agility and flexibility of Network Function Virtualization (NFV) in an open platform that supports Virtual Network Functions (VNF) service in parallel to or as part of a service chain with SD-WAN services, this according to Telco Systems. With this capability, organizations can avoid the time, resources and capital it took to deploy stand-alone appliances on the customer's premise for each offered service.

“Our joint offering with Silver Peak delivers the freedom telcos and managed service providers have been searching for to pick and choose the VNF services they want to offer without the traditional constraints of any particular vCPE or SD-WAN platform,” said Raanan Tzemach, Vice President of Product Management at Telco Systems.

The new joint service is being demonstrated at the NFV World Congress currently being held in San Jose, CA through May 5.
