Deploying the right technology can optimize application performance at the branch and resolve the vast majority of problems at remote offices. This will minimize central IT maintenance and management while lowering costs and introducing new levels of efficiency's across all branches. The new improvements announced by Silver Peak (News - Alert) to its Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN solution is going to displace the need for branch routers by shifting to an application-driven WAN edge - high-performance SD-WAN. According to the company, this will make the first fully integrated SD-WAN solution that combines high performance SD-WAN, WAN optimization, routing and a stateful firewall allowing enterprises to leverage the advantages of a thin branch office.

Silver Peak provides high-performance SD-WAN solution to more than 2,000 globally distributed enterprises by connecting users and the applications they need and letting them use any combination of underlying transport without compromising network or application performance. This type of flexibility is essential in today's collaborative, always on and on-demand digital business ecosystem.

The company has stated the new improvements to Unity EdgeConnect SD-WAN build on the agility and flexibility of the platform by simplifying and consolidating branch office infrastructure, shifting the WAN edge towards being application-driven and enable secure and directing internet connectivity to SaaS (News - Alert), and trusted web-based applications from the branch office.

The complexity, cost and inflexible router-centric architectures of legacy WAN are hindering enterprises from competing and capitalizing on opportunities as they come around. According to Damon Ennis, senior vice president, products at Silver Peak, this has resulted in, "Enterprise network managers reach a boiling point."

Ennis goes on to say, "Increasingly, enterprises are seeking to simplify branch and WAN Edge infrastructure with SD-WAN solutions that connect users directly from branch offices to cloud-hosted applications without sacrificing application performance. EdgeConnect enables distributed enterprises to immediately or progressively transform their router-centric WAN infrastructures to an SD-WAN to gain the performance, security, reliability and control they require to keep pace with changing business requirements."

The application driven SD-WAN features of Unity EdgeConnect can intelligently identify apps on the first packet to enable granular steering of traffic - more than 10,000 applications and 300 million web domains according to Silver Peak.  It also simplifies SD-WAN service chaining to protect users no matter where the apps reside with edge-to-edge data security with 256-bit AES encryption and real-time traffic direction over any broadband or MPLS links.

For organizations that are geographically dispersed, Unity EdgeConnect has become a preferred SD-WAN solution, with more than 350 customer deployments and counting.
