Why Power Protection Shouldn't Be an Afterthought

Do you ever have mixed feelings when it comes to power outages? It may seem like a strange request, but the loss of power can also mean a slow-down to an otherwise busy life – something my daughter noticed when the power went out on her birthday one year. A heavy layer of ice covered the region and knocked out power for days, leaving us to identify other means of birthday entertainment.

We didn’t have power protection in place, which meant that all of our devices and systems were at risk. Fortunately, we knew enough to unplug everything before a surge occurred as power was being restored, but that didn’t keep us from trying to turn on lights every time we entered a room. Some habits are hard to break, but it’s amazing how life slows down when access to the basics is limited.

In Ocean County over the weekend, a car accident caused a power outage that not only shut off the lights, but also stranded riders at Six Flags Great Adventure. The car crash occurred on Route 537 in Jackson Township and knocked out power to the area Sunday afternoon, according to a post in the Patch. All guests were safely unloaded from the rides at the amusement park during one of the park’s busiest seasons.

While guests were not interviewed for the Patch article, one can assume that nerves were put on alert when rides had to be stopped and evacuated. There’s always a risk inherent in amusement park rides, and the hope is that park officials would take the necessary steps to keep all individuals safe.

The same is true in the corporate world. A power outage may not make us worry for our safety, but we do tend to think in terms of lost data, lost processes and lost revenue. None of these is good for business, especially when the power outage occurs in the middle of a big project. Having power protection that does more than just make backup power accessible is good for business.

Power protection solution companies like Minuteman stand out for that reason. The company’s offerings also ensure data is protected in the event of a power outage. Saving and backup are key if you want to ensure your projects and processes can continue without interruption. After all, success in business is about more than just keeping the lights on.

For our daughter, the power outage meant a fun night of Uno (News - Alert) by candlelight and the fireplace. She wanted to do it again the next year, but that time we could at least keep the heat on.
