Recent news out of Newport, N.H. verifies that a faulty circuit breaker left the town without power for nearly an hour on November 5.

Local source the Eagle Times noted last week that about 1,050 Eversource customers found themselves without power for a short stretch. Just before noon, the circuit breaker that controlled the resuming of power to customers northwest of Route 103 malfunctioned. Normally, circuit breakers try to provide power to service areas following a service interruption. In this case, however, its improper functioning led to residences and schools without electricity.

Martin Murray, the manager of public relations at Eversource, quickly commented on the issue.

“A piece of equipment on Cheney Street that acts as a circuit breaker acted improperly,” Murray said simply.

Power company officials were able to restore service by 11:42 a.m.

Although service providers’ equipment is meant to address power outages, it is clear that sometimes even that backup equipment can fail. Outages of just a few minutes, let alone 42, can hinder business operations to the point of harm. It can stop the flow of revenue by halting product sales and communications with customers. This gives reason for enterprises to seek out their own backup power supplies that can stem such harm and possible data loss with a continuous supply of electricity.

Minuteman Power Technologies (News - Alert) offers uninterruptable power supplies (UPSs) that can help fill the gap in services that residents of Newport recently witnessed. Bill Allen, the director of marketing at Minuteman, recently commented to TMC (News - Alert) CEO Rich Tehrani about how his company’s UPSs can provide management of a power network as well as power itself. Managers want to know what is happening inside their personal grids, and with their own power supplies, entire businesses can see its inner workings and feel more secure about their daily operations.

In Newport, the Eagle Times reported that Newport Middle High School used its own backup generator to supply power to about half the building. This allowed operations during the school’s lunch period to continue as normal. Towle Elementary School, on the other hand, reported a loss of electricity and phones, and it did not have operable phone service until about 1 p.m.

To combat those problems, businesses may want to look into UPSs for, at least, their own peace of mind. Personal power supplies can keep all business activities running smoothly until are power companies are able to resume normal services to their customers.
