Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems certainly made a big splash in the power protection market in 2011, particularly as companies came to fear the big bad downtime wolf more than ever before. And, according to recent reports, the trend of UPSs will not be waning any time soon.

"UPS systems are already an important energy storage feature in cost-efficient and smart buildings," said vice president of research at Pike Research (News - Alert) Bob Gohn. "The emergence of hybrid topologies that automatically switch between different power modes can reduce energy costs over time without compromising power quality."

UPSs, which rely on a built-in energy storage source such as a battery, flywheel or other devices, have proven extremely valuable recently particularly because of their ability to prevent downtime which can wreak havoc on businesses who are still grappling with tough economic times.

While most of these systems used to be point solutions designed to protect an individual PC, server, medical device, airport or factory, today, new technologies and architectures are emerging that can more effectively integrate UPS systems into the larger power infrastructure. Specifically, since many IT vendors and users are eying the green movement, UPSs are being viewed as units that can support existing IT infrastructures that are going green.

According to a recent report from Pike Research, these trends, along with significant growth in emerging economies, will lead to strong growth for the UPS sector in the next few years. The global market for UPS systems is expected to expand from $8.2 billion in 2011 to $9.4 billion in 2012, a year-on-year growth rate of 14 percent, the cleantech market intelligence firm forecasts. By 2015, the market is expected grow to $13.2 billion.

As stated in the report, titled "Next Generation Uninterruptible Power Supplies," next generation UPS systems might get a bit of a makeover as experts are predicting that they will soon combine several key features, including a built-in energy storage source, such as batteries, flywheels or compressed air, and circuitry to supply clean and sufficient power over periods lasting from a few seconds to several hours. Most leading UPS systems also have some form of surge protection or power filtering circuitry.

In other industry news, power protection solutions provider Minuteman UPS/Para Systems (News - Alert), in honor of the New Year, recently sat down with TMCnet to shed some light on its SNMP-NV6 card, an add-on card that affords tremendous benefits for users, according to company officials.

“Minuteman offers several options for monitoring and controlling select UPS and remote power management products via Simple Network Management Protocol, or SNMP,” Duston Nixon, marketing communications specialist for Minuteman, told TMCnet. “These add-on cards are available for many of our products, and expand the user’s capabilities tremendously. Through the SNMP NMS and Web browser, users can obtain the UPS status, issue commands to the UPS, and even provide safe shutdown during power events for select operating systems.”

The SNMP-NV6 communications card represents the newest model in Minuteman’s lineup of SNMP communications equipment. The units offer 10/100 Mbit IPv4 or IPv6 connection, and are protected with V3 and SSL 32-bit security.
