Open Networking Projects are Seeing Higher Memberships

Open networking projects have been responsible for the rapid adoption of software defined networking (SDN) and network functions virtualization (NFV) as enterprises, service providers, telecoms, and network and data center operators look for solutions to address the high demand on their infrastructure. One of the leading organizations is the Open Platform for Network Functions Virtualization Project, which is in great part responsible for accelerating the transformation of enterprise and service provider networks. The OPNFV announced these efforts are responsible for increasing its membership around the world, with the 50+-member association that is the China SDN/NFV Industry Alliance and Netscout becoming the latest organizations to join the project.


The announcement came as OPNFV Day was held as part of OpenStack Summit's Open Source (News - Alert) Days, which is currently taking place in Boston until May 11, 2017. In this summit the collaboration between OPNFV and OpenStack communities will be highlighted, as both organizations work for a common infrastructure that can be easily deployed and expedite the launch of new services in the market place.

The OPNFV project is designed to increase the number of its members, because each organization that comes aboard brings skill sets and technologies that will improve the industry as a whole. Open networking or open source ecosystems provide a collaborative upstream development, integration, deployment, and testing from leading service providers, carriers, vendors, research institutions and other collaborators. This not only ensures the quality of new developments, but it also makes it that much easier to deploy once there is a consensus.

"SDN/NFV Industry Alliance brings the industry together to build up the SDN/NFV ecosystem, promote solutions to help organizations migrate from existing networks to new, SDN/NFV-based architectural solutions. By joining the OPNFV community, we hope to work together in an integrated, multi-vendor testing environment to drive solutions that advance commercial deployments of NFV technologies," said China SDN/NFV Industry Alliance chairman, Mr. Wei Leping. 

The China SDN/NFV Industry Alliance has more than 50 members, and it is also looking to accelerate innovations in the SDN/NFV industry and the end-to-end open networking stack with the same guiding principles of OPNFV. It was established in 2014 by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) along with 15 industry organizations.

"We are pleased to welcome China SDN/NFV Industry Alliance and NETSCOUT to the OPNFV community as our newest members. Collaboration is key to accelerating a collective vision for the future, and we look forward to their diverse perspectives and contributions, including the acceleration of open source NFV in China and further exploring the areas of service assurance and security with the support of NETSCOUT. ," said Heather Kirksey, director, OPNFV.

Netscout on the other hand is a single company that gives service provider, enterprise and government networks business assurance through a combination of service assurance, cybersecurity and business intelligence solutions. The company's experience in network visibility, which includes its Adaptive Service Intelligence (ASI) technology can provide the OPNFV project with insight in identifying performance issues and network-based security threats.
