The rate in which digital communications is evolving is in great part responsible for the current Open Networking trend taking place in the industry. Whether it is enterprises, telecoms, hardware manufacturers or data center and network operators, they don't want the limitations of propriety systems of the past that greatly limited growth. The new pair of Dell (News - Alert) EMC switches are designed as multi-gig switches for campus networks with the Open Networking framework so they are not limited by propriety systems. The company introduced the N3132PX-ON (News - Alert) and N2128PX-ON switches, expanding its networking portfolio to fully take advantage of the recently ratified 802.3bz standard that defines 2.5 Gbps and 5 Gbps Ethernet speeds by the IEEE.

The Dell EMC (News - Alert) Open Networking switch portfolio brings together the Open Compute Project’s (OCP) Open Network Install Environment (ONIE), as it allows organizations to choose the systems they want to run because the switches are not bound to a specific network operating system. This lets organizations have more freedom by letting them choose the system that is best suited for their specific applications.

According to Dell, it is working with Cumulus Linux to enable open networking choices for its customers, but the network operating system that will be enabled on the new switches hasn't been determined yet.

After the new official standards 2.5 and 5 Gigabit Ethernet were ratified, Dell is helping to advance switch abstraction interface by embracing Cumulus Linux for Networking with the N3132PX-ON and N2128PX-ON switches.

Both switches are part of the Dell EMC multi-gig Ethernet capable solution, with the N3132 providing 32-port switch with 24 10/100/1000 Mbps and an additional 8 multi-gig (2.5/5GbE) RJ45 port 10/100/1000/2500/5000 Mbps ports. This includes up to 32 ports of PoE 60W so you can attach devices with high power requirements (up to 30.8 watts for PoE+, up to 60 watts for PoE 60W) without running a separate power cable. The Power-over-Ethernet configuration makes it cost efficient for aging infrastructures where installing power to multiple, widespread locations would require additional investment.

The The N2128-ON is also capable of handling 2.5 and 5 Gbps Ethernet with 24 ports of 1GbE plus 4 ports of 2.5GbE, stack with existing N2000 Series and PoE+ on GigE ports and PoE60W on Multi Gig ports.

The 2.5 and 5 Gbps Ethernet standards were finalized in September of 2016 after two years of development, with industry players insisting that this capability be available on existing Cat5/Cat6 cabling currently being used by organizations of all sizes and industries.
