EMA, Infoblox Conduct Survey on Network Management Software Automation

By Carolyn J Dawson, TMCnet Contributor

Enterprise Management Associates (EMA (News - Alert)), a leading Research Analyst Firm, and Infoblox, a leading developer of advanced network infrastructure automation and control solutions, have recently announced the results of a survey on the usage of automated network management software tools and technologies. The automated network management tools and technologies aid organizations in improving their speed implementation and reducing costly errors while executing strategic IT initiatives such as virtualization, cloud computing, IPv6 and compliance rollouts, while removing manual or human errors.

The survey was headed by the Director of Network Management Research at EMA, Jim Frey. The results of the survey show that 80 percent of enterprise IT network managers have claimed to have adopted network automation tools while stating that reduced error rates, time savings and enabling significant new projects such as virtualization, IPv6, and compliance to be the drivers for the adoption. The respondents admitted that network configuration errors which require corrective actions are being introduced through human/manual mistakes on a regular basis.

On average, five to six such errors were experienced per month and a frequency of nearly 10 per month is likely to be experienced by those who are in process of or still planning to deploy network automation. The survey statistics reveal that those with more automation tools deployed experienced less errors, especially virtualization tools and configurations such as VLAN, ACLs and firewall settings. With reference to IP addresses, 67 percent of the survey respondents are expecting a rise of nearly 25 percent in the next one year, while 16 percent expect a growth surge of 26 – 50 percent.

In a press release, Frey said, “I am afraid many organizations are primed for a rude awakening when they attempt to broadly take advantage of virtualization applications; the amount of change in the network and real-time requirements will be daunting for IT representatives to tackle without the necessary automation tools in place.”

The Vice President of Corporate Marketing, Infoblox (News - Alert), Steve Garrison, added, “The good news from the survey is that many enterprise IT teams have taken the first necessary steps to build automation into their networks, but the levels of automation required to realize IT at the speed of thought are beyond what most network teams have considered today. Infoblox, which offers platforms that can help automate and control network infrastructure functions, invites enterprise IT teams to learn more about the infrastructure automation required to achieve stability, high availability, business continuity, security, compliance and operational efficiency for tomorrow’s next generation dynamic and more complex networks.”
