D2 Technologies' SoftDSP VoIP Codec Provides Leading-Edge Performance for RMI

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

D2 Technologies has ramped up its G.729 softDSP codec by enhancing its performance to optimal levels on RMI’s XLS Processor (News - Alert) family.

The 64-bit multi-core multi-threaded processor from RMI, a provider of high performance processors for communications and media, is targeted at enterprise and infrastructure applications and focuses on allowing OEMs to deliver VoIP solutions that offer best-in-class performance at competitive price points.

“By integrating D2 Technologies’ (News - Alert) vPort VoIP solution with the XLS Processor Family, we are able to offer OEMs an optimized reference solution enabling them to reduce development costs and to shorten the time-to-market for the converged communications products most in demand by today’s consumers,”  said Mark Litvack, director of business development at RMI.

D2’s vPort Gateway (News - Alert) is an embedded VoIP software for a new residential gateway aimed at meeting the needs of small office home office users.

The Santa Barbara, California-based company is the market leader in embedded software platforms that power IP communications. The company’s mCUE and vPort products are available for use by manufacturers in a wide variety of product segments covering consumer, enterprise and carrier devices.

In fact, it is expected that D2’s softDSP codec running on RMI’s XLS Processor will now extend its platforms and give OEMs additional cost-effective solution for delivering advanced media and VoIP-enabled voice across multiple platforms.

The two companies made the announcement after testing and tuning D2’s G.729 softDSP codec for optimum performance on the RMI XLS Processor family of multi-threaded processor targeted at enterprise and infrastructure applications.

The combined line is expected to provide a high performance general purpose processor that has programmability, scalability and intelligent packet management and also delivers high quality triple- and quadruple-play voice/video/data/wireless functionality with the lowest possible power consumption available.

Once integrated with D2’s software, the XLS Processor Family provides advanced VoIP telephony capabilities with minimal memory and CPU impact, of particular importance for low cost implementations.

“Since the softDSP codecs in our vPort solution are optimized to support the MIPS architecture, they easily combine with RMI’s XLS Processors to produce highly-scalable and cost-effective solutions for solving the bandwidth-intensive processing issues posed by today’s complex media offerings,” said Doug Makishima, vice president of marketing and sales at D2 Technologies.

The XLS Thread Processor can be configured to support the 64/72-bit interfaces required for interfacing to low-cost commodity DIMM memories. The new devices provide pin-compatible upgrades for all members of the XLS Processor Family including the 600 Series, 400 Series, and 200 Series, according to the companies.

As TMCnet earlier this week reported, D2 demonstrated its converged communications client for WiMAX mobile devices, allowing audiences at the Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) in Barcelona a view at its mCUE converged communications client designed for mobile devices and handsets on the HTC G1.
