Is Metro Ethernet 2.0 Really Better?

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Technology has certainly evolved over the years. Everything is now labeled numerically, demonstrating a particular version, supported technology and more. They all have meaning, and fortunately, we don’t have to know a lot about the numbers, except which one is the most current. Once a company develops a new version of their product, we see its latest iteration as a new number. This is exactly what happened with Metro Ethernet 2.0.

According to this Ethernet Academy report, Metro Ethernet has been around for more than 10 years. The newest version is known as Carrier Ethernet 2.0. Recently, the Metro Ethernet Forum (News - Alert) was held in Munich to introduce the new concept. John Hawkins, the Co-Chair for Metro Ethernet, handled the Forum himself.

Hawkins shared that Carrier Ethernet 2.0 is the next generation of the same technology. It is a multi class of service (multi-CoS) and is managed and interconnected to extend value. The multi class aspect of the new Carrier Ethernet 2.0 handles MEF (News - Alert) 23.1 Implementation Agreements and MEF 6.1 Technical Specs. As a result, the service is better supported and more understood by all who use it.

Because of the interconnection, E-Line and E-LAN services can be used by putting the different operator facilities onto the networks. This means a broader use of the technology and more flexibility in its capabilities.

The management of the system has received enhancements as well. The new techniques in place are used to check the system on a continual basis, making sure there is a connection throughout the service as a whole. This means that an operator can trace the service end-to-end more easily to indentify current or potential issues.

While Carrier Ethernet 2.0 is not yet available, the finishing touches are being added now so that the product can be ready for service soon. The Metro Ethernet Forum took a step in the right direction by introducing the solution before it was available, providing companies with adequate time to check out the latest version and decide if they are ready for the upgrade.

Carrier Ethernet 2.0 definitely has its own set of benefits that the original Metro Ethernet did not offer. To find out more about the product and exactly what the differences are, check out
