PIKA Connect for Skype Begins Field Trials

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Associate Editor

PIKA Technologies, a manufacturer of media processing solutions, recently announced the launch of limited field trials interfacing the company’s PIKA Connect Software Development Kit (SDK) with Skype.

PIKA Connect for Skype delivers server and client-side components enabling developers to build business communications solutions that interface with Skype (News - Alert).

“Recognizing the importance of Internet communications services such as Skype in the business world, we have undertaken the process to deliver connectivity to this world from within PIKA’s SDK,” said PIKA’s Vice President of Technology and Operations, Doug Petty, in a press release. “The first step of this is PIKA Connect for Skype.

On the server side, PIKA Connect uses AllOnHost to provide real-time audio switching, call transfer and media processing functions; audio processing from TDM, VoIP and Skyp; and API commands for controlling remote Skype clients.

On the client side, PIKA Connect uses a gateway to transfer audio and call information between client and server.

PIKA’s Business Development Manager, David Clark, said in the release that PIKA had to overcome two main challenges in developing the new product: connection to the client (access to both audio and call control), and media processing of audio without adding noticeable delay.

The second challenge was the more difficult one to overcome, but technology already developed by the company saved the day.

“PIKA AllOnHost is designed for that exact purpose and is the key differentiator of our solution from basic gateway approaches,” Clarke explained.

More information about PIKA Connect for Skype is available in a whitepaper from PIKA.
