Energy Big Deploys Pingtel SIPxchange

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

Open source SIP-based Enterprise Communications Systems firm Pingtel (News - Alert) announced today that its SIPxchange ECS solution is being used by gas and oil producer Pennsylvania General Energy (PGE). SIPxchange is installed at at PGE's Warren, Pennsylvania headquarters to deliver improved voice communications to its entire staff.

The energy provider first initiated a market wide search for a new Private Branch eXchange (PBX) to replace its existing solution, which it said often clipped conversations and frequently caused echoing, making it difficult to conduct conference calls.

After a thorough and lengthy vendor evaluation process, PGE selected SIPxchange from Pingtel to provide a standards-based open source voice over internet protocol (VoIP) solution to its staff of nearly 100 employees.

“SIPxchange contains the feature set, scalability, reliability and ease of use we were looking for,” said Glenn Slocum of SDC Associates, Inc., technical supervisor at PGE.

By selecting the SIPxchange IP PBX (News - Alert), PGE executives said it will leverage the advantage of the SIP-standard interoperability, low total cost of ownership, and complete system support that are inherent to the solution.

“The Web-based management makes the entire phone system—including managing phones, gateways and other devices—extremely easy to use,” Slocum said.

Slocum said after PGE received a demo from an existing Pingtel customer, moving forward with SIPxchange was an easy decision.

With SIPxchange’s native session initiation protocol (SIP) compatibility, PGE is now expecting to integrate its existing Polycom (News - Alert) phones — saving on overall system replacement costs.

PGE relies on these phones to monitor the presence of more than 40 employees using busy lamp fields on their Polycom 601 attendant consoles, according to the company.

An AudioCodes (News - Alert) MP-118 stand-alone FXO gateway connects the solution to the public switched telephone network (PSTN), and the entire system is centrally managed through Pingtel’s Web-based SIPxchange management console.

Martin Steinmann, vice president of product management at Bluesocket (News - Alert), said PGE serves as a great example of SIPxchange’s interoperability and architectural flexibility.

“SIPxchange gives PGE complete control of its phone system and allows the mixing and matching of components based on a best-of-breed strategy that saves money and future-proofs the system.”

Pingtel was acquired by Bluesocket in July 2007. By combining the strengths of the companies, Bluesocket is now positioned to be among the first WLAN/Mobility companies to offer turnkey unified mobile communication solutions - meeting the demands of today's mobile enterprise, according to Steinmann.
