Nuance Enables Hands-Free Music On-the-Go via Vela App

Nuance (News - Alert) Communications, a provider of voice recognition technologies, announced its voice technologies now power Vela App, a music app for iOS that lets people get instant access to their favorite music accounts such as Spotify (News - Alert), Rdio and more.


Vela is an acronym for “Voice Enhanced Listening Assistant.”

The 2013 SXSW (News - Alert) Music Accelerator finalist, Vela leverages the NDEV Mobile developer program and gives users easy access to a world of music.

According to Matt Revis, vice president and general manager of Dragon Devices at Nuance Mobile, NDEV continues to provide the power of voice to developers all over the world, driving an ecosystem of apps like Vela that humanize the mobile app experience.

Supported by Nuance Dragon speech technology, Vela allows users to search and play virtually any song, artist or album by simply speaking to it. 

“Vela supports access to millions of songs, artists and albums, and we needed to give people a simple and intuitive way to find the music they want while on the go,” said Justin Mason, founder and chief executive officer at Vela. “Nothing is more intuitive than the human voice, and Nuance’s voice capabilities differentiate the music app experience while delivering incredible accuracy.”

The Vela app is available for iOS with a free version—Vela Lite—and a paid premium option – Vela Pro. Spotify or Rdio require paid premium subscriptions to their respective services.

Recently, Nuance also launched new technology that is designed to revolutionize the way mobile advertisements are delivered to customers.  

The new Nuance Voice Ads integrate Nuance’s voice technology to transform traditional mobile advertising into an engaging and entertaining conversational experience, company officials said. An ad appears and prompts the consumer to participate by speaking to it. From there, the conversation drives the experience, which is tailored to meet both the needs of the brand and the consumer.
