The Cisneros Group Announces Plans to Bid for Third Private TV Channel

The Cisneros Group plans to bid in collaboration with Colombian businessman Luis Carlos Sarmiento for a license to operate Colombia’s new third privately-owned television channel, according to a press release. The announcement was made by Gustavo Cisneros, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Cisneros Group of Companies.  Mr. Cisneros also added that the bid will be made in the next few weeks. Through the bid, the group plans to expand the media entertainment alternatives currently offered to the Latin American nation.

 
Luis Carlos Sarmiento has held the reputation of being one of the most important businessmen in Colombia. He holds interests in telecommunications, construction and finance.
 
The Cisneros Group of Companies is one of the largest privately held media, entertainment, telecommunications and consumer products organizations in the world. The Group of companies owns or holds interests in companies that range from broadcast television, television production, and telecommunications to beverage businesses and travel resorts. The Group also has extensive experience in a variety of industries. Media and entertainment is its core operating area. Some of the companies constituting the Group include Americatel, Claxson, Fisa, Gaveplast, Movida, Vene Music, Venevision Plus, Venemobile, etc.
 
Cisneros has signed several diverse partnerships with other firms. Through its attractive and eclectic product portfolio, the company offers some of the most recognized brands and highest quality services to the 550 million Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking consumers in the Americas and Europe. The Cisneros Group also sells TV programming and other media content across five continents, and in over 90 countries.
 
"It gives me great pleasure to participate in this process, which is why we just met in Bogota with the board of the National Television Commission of Colombia (CNTV)," Mr. Cisneros was quoted as saying in the report.  
 
In addition to the Cisneros Group, there are several other groups participating in the bid. The other groups that show keen interest in bidding on this new commercial channel include Casa Editorial El Tiempo with the Planeta Group of Spain; Grupo Prisa of Spain possibly with Televideo; Group Angel Gonzalez of Miami alongside Camilo Cano; RTI beside NBC Universal (News - Alert) Telemundo and Televisa of Mexico.
 
Reports suggest that the new channel will go on the air in the year 2009.
