NECs Mobile Terminals Operations Unit Goes Live with i2

BY David R. Butcher, Assistant Editor, Customer Interaction Solutions

Announced today, NEC Corporations Mobile Terminals Operations Unit is now live with i2 Technologies solutions. i2 Technologies, Inc. provides demand-driven supply chain solutions designed to enable business agility.

NEC, a provider of Internet, broadband network and enterprise solutions, has implemented a variety of i2 products in its Mobile Terminals Operations Unit, including the following: Demand Manager for customer demand forecasting; Supply Chain Planner for master scheduling; Performance Manager for KPI management; Demand Fulfillment for capable-to-promise functionality; Distributed Order Execution for order management; Master Data Management for data management; and the i2 Supply Chain Operating System as a platform for these solutions.

The project began toward the conclusion of last year, and the system went live last month. In this system, sales information is collected from Japan, China, Australia and other Asian and European countries; using that data, a material sourcing plan and manufacturing plan is designed to meet customer demand. The system then checks whether or not fulfillment and materials order have been done properly.

As i2 sees it, the mobile telecommunications industry is experiencing wide swings in customer demand. Global competition is becoming keen, resulting in NEC having to shift its manufacturing capability abroad and expand its sales channel globally. This shift had to take place quickly.

NEC was facing keen competition and changing customer demand, and i2 had to provide a solution as soon as possible, said Yoichi Yokomizo, president of i2 Technologies, Japan, in a company statement. I believe that only i2 can deliver such a comprehensive solution and implement it within such a short time period. As a result, our customer can now manage change, not be managed by change.

NEC reports that implementation of i2 Supply Chain Management solutions has enhanced the companys ability to respond to changes and gain visibility, therefore enabling it to overcome those business challenges.

Also, late last month NEC Corporation announced that its resolution to sell a part of its holdings in its affiliate, Elpida Memory, Inc. As a result of this sale in holdings, Elpida Memory, Inc. will no longer be an affiliated company of NEC as accounted for by the equity method. There will be no change in NECs business relationship with the company in all areas including product procurement.
