Grandstream, BroadSoft Achieve Interoperability with GXP1600 Phone Line
By Steve Anderson, Contributing Writer

Interoperability is one of those great things that many companies strive for. The more a product works with other products, the more likely it is to work smoothly with current operations and therefore be selected to fill in any future holes in said operation. Grandstream Networks (News - Alert) brought out a new interoperability connection of its own, announcing that its GXP1600 line of IP phones for small business was interoperable with BroadSoft's BroadWorks as well as various other session initiation protocol (SIP) based services.

The GXP1600 line of small business IP phones includes four models: the GXP1610, the GXP1620, the GXP1625 and the GXP1628. Each has several features in common, reports note, including a new design that provides not only a better overall aesthetic, but also better quality in the build. Further, the design changes have reportedly yielded a larger LED display as well as better acoustics, making calls sound better.

All of the devices, reports note, also offer three programmable XML soft keys, as well as three-way conferencing options, support for the Electronic Hook Switch (EHS) option on Plantronics (News - Alert)' line of headsets, and support for 20 separate languages. There are even specific buttons devoted to intercom and paging systems as well as for call recording, where applicable. The speakerphone capability, meanwhile, is full duplex and offers advanced acoustic echo cancellation.

These are all great reasons to consider the GXP1600 line, but perhaps the best reason now is that it works with the BroadWorks platform. With BroadWorks, users get access to a complete line of services that operate regardless of the breed of network involved. Features available include things like auto attendant systems, voice messaging and conferencing, selective call forwarding, and even dial-by-name options.

Either of these systems alone would make a good case for its own existence. Putting the two together, meanwhile, means a powerhouse of IP calling capability for small businesses. As more and more such businesses—and even some of the larger enterprises out there—realize the value that IP phones and IP calling can have together, there will likely be an increased push toward bringing the two together. At that point, interoperability will become vital; no one wants to buy a system that won't work with what's already in place, necessitating a full teardown of what's already working, and no one wants to buy two separate systems only to discover later that one won't play nice with the other. That's a waste of time, effort and resources, a waste that no company wants to come in contact with. But that's why the Grandstream / BroadSoft (News - Alert) revelation is so important; those who buy in on either side, or both at once, can be assured that the two lines will be able to provide the various benefits to the user without incident.

Interoperability helps keep the business world running; it helps ensure that new arrivals can easily integrate with current systems, and helps ensure that whole new systems assembled from mixed components also work smoothly. BroadSoft and Grandstream's interoperability, meanwhile, should prove a welcome development for those looking for better communications in business.
