snom's TR-069 Gives Carriers Power to Configure Multiple Devices More Easily

As technology evolves, so does the cost of upgrading it. As small to large enterprises are investing in VoIP, they’re looking for ways to save – and keep up with innovation.

That’s why snom’s most current VoIP phones are now equipped with carrier-control mechanisms based on the TR-069 standard, developed by the International Broadband Forum (News - Alert). The technology allows IP endpoints to contact auto-configuration servers to automatically obtain the latest updates and security settings.

For example, a carrier using a carrier-control mechanism based on the TR-069 standard can more easily make updates and change settings for growing customer bases, according to snom, which calls itself the first VoIP phone manufacturer to support the protocol. Or, snom’s customers in the business and public-sector space can customize any number of extensions to its snom phones at no extra cost, and configure all devices simultaneously.

In essence, snom’s support of the TR-069 standard alleviates some of the complexity of managing a large VoIP system with multiple components and potential configurations of individual devices. It helps carriers utilize large-scale hosted solutions and upgrades.

“There’s now some definite movement to more hosted systems from service providers,” Mike Storella (News - Alert), a spokesman for the company, told TMCnet. “And clearly when service providers are deploying large volumes of phones, they want to control the endpoint in the most efficient manner.”

Thus, the TR-069 is a modern alternative to the costly, time-consuming manual configuration process.

“As a trusted manufacturer of secure IP phones we are pleased to simplify the management of very large phone systems, and use the TR-069 standard to enable automatic configuration,” said Oliver Wittig, vice president of sales for EMEA for snom technology AG (News - Alert). “For many manufacturers of IP phones TR-069 is not easy to achieve. That we can now offer our customers this improvement once again reinforces snom’s position as a pioneer in telephony.”
