VoIP Integrated Communications

By Jessica Kostek, TMCnet Channel Editor

Due in part to their flexibility and cost-savings, integrated IP communication services, such as VoIP, are seeing more use. A recent report from TeleGeography (News - Alert) found that VoIP is now also having an effect on the fixed-line market in Europe.

According to the report, a number of incumbent phone companies in Europe are introducing discounted VoIP services that offer cost appeal over traditional voice services, and are aggressively marketing VoIP to take hold of the market.

In addition, they are selling discounted dual- and triple-play services that include VoIP, and in doing so, bolstering the market.

At the end of 2008, the report said, there were 34.6 million consumer VoIP lines in service in western Europe. That's an increase over the 25.9 million which were in service by the end of 2007, and a major leap from 2005, with about six million consumer IP telephony customers.

One Boston-based national telecommunications provider says it has all of its IP services delivered over a private nationwide network that gives end-users a range of options to meet their voice and data communications needs. TNCI’s service, called “TNCInet Advantage”, includes SIP trunking, hosted PBX (News - Alert) and integrated access – either DIA or PRI.

Those who cannot afford or don’t want to make the investment in switching to a state-of-the-art phone system should look into a hosted or integrated solution, said Brenda MacDonald, vice president of carrier relations for TNCI.

“With this suite of IP solutions, most businesses have an option with TNCI,” she said.

Also, the report noted that VoIP now accounts for more than 24 percent of fixed-line telephone subscribers in Europe and about 10 percent of voice revenue.

“If a customer wants to try our service, they can start with an IP connection, experience the strong quality of our network and the support of our team, and then choose to grow with us from there,” MacDonald said. “Multi-location businesses could use one or more of the options at each location. Since we are using our private IP network as the platform, what they have on each premise can be different yet speak to each other.”

The raising use of VoIP is not surprising to TNCI. Company officials know that in this down economy, companies are continuously looking for cost effective ways to improve integrated communications within their organization.

As a result of this increased use of VoIP phone services, a new report from AMI-Partners predicts SMB’s in APAC will improve growth in the networking market – reaching about 1.6 billion this year.

The report also said that the APAC SMB networking market will grow 1.7 percent this year not only as more businesses look to adopt IP voice and video services but also as more employees are connected to the network.

According to Gina Luk, Asia-Pacific telecommunications and networking research manager at AMI-Partners, the last couple of years have seen a sharp increase in mobility services.

"This is occurring as SMB employees in the developed APAC region are traveling more and farther. Korea and Australia SMBs have a greater propensity for telecommuting, while Japan and Australia SMBs tend to be more mobile because of travel. This is evident even among firms across all employee segments.”
