Well, there goes the neighborhood. It’s official: Comcast (News - Alert) is the first cable operator to bring a carrier-grade SD-WAN solution to market. Comcast announced at Interop ITX that its mid-market and enterprise solution is beginning beta testing.

The Comcast Business solution comes as a result of a partnership with Versa Networks, utilizing the Versa Cloud IP Platform to deliver the turnkey service. The SD-WAN solution pairs the agility that only software can provide with gigabit speeds to promise improved application performance, cost cutting and centralized network policy management.

“Our SD-WAN solution pairs a carrier-grade, hosted SDN environment with widely available gigabit service,” said Kevin O’Toole, senior vice president of Product Management for Comcast Business. “Together, our SD-WAN and gigabit bandwidth solutions herald a new generation of networking that provides the bandwidth, scalability, reliability and flexibility needed to power the cloud applications that are transforming business operations.”

It was only a matter of time before a Comcast Business joined the SD-WAN arena, as it is unveiling its Business Internet 1000, a gigabit Ethernet service for businesses. Comcast already offers multi-gigabit, fiber-based Ethernet services nationwide, so coupling the SD-WAN service with the aforementioned offerings creates quite a value proposition for the enterprise.

“Given the speeds and ubiquity of today’s broadband, SD-WAN is making the internet a secure and smarter business option for growth,” said Courtney Munroe, group vice president, IDC (News - Alert). “Now, businesses can more cost-effectively add the bandwidth they need across branch locations to succeed in today’s fast-paced digital economy. Comcast’s SD-WAN and high-speed broadband network is an innovative trial offering that can complement any existing business network.”

The beta testing will take place throughout the summer, with the expectation of an official, full market release by the end of 2017.

SD-WAN is clearly surpassing the passing fad phase, as the performance results paint a compelling picture and the cost efficiency is undeniable.

Welcome to the party, Comcast! I’m curious to see how this plays out…
