Microsem Corp. Unveils Two New DC-Powered Power-over-Ethernet Midspans

Of late, usage of high power applications in DC (direct current) environments has increased. Generally, to power such applications, AC (alternating current) or an external DC to AC power converter with AC midspans is used. However, this option of providing power to such devices is not a lucrative choice.

As an alternative, high Power over Ethernet (PoE) midspans and splitters can be used, as these devices eliminate the need to install power outlets and electrical cabling.

Addressing the networking and security industries’ requirement for cost-effective solutions, Microsemi (News - Alert) Corporation, a California-based provider of semiconductor solutions, has rolled-out two new DC-powered PoE midspans, namely PD-9501G and PD-9501GO.

The PD-9501G is designed for indoor use, while the PD-9501GO is designed for outdoor installations. Both the devices can act as cost-efficient standalone solutions for powering LAN access points, security cameras, Internet protocol (IP) videophones, thin clients and other high power applications in DC environments.

As cited by Microsemi, the new single-port midspans can be powered by DC power ranging from 10-60 VDC. While, these devices can provide standard PoE power to applications requiring 15.4, 30 and 60 watts (W) of power.

Featuring plug-and-play installation, both PD-9501G and PD-9501GO are available in DC input versions that eliminate the need to double convert power. This feature enables users to experience an eco-friendly and more efficient means to power devices without the need to convert AC to DC.

DC input versions of PD-9501G and PD-9501GO include: PD-9501G/24VDC, PD-9501G/48VDC, PD-9501GO/12-24VDC, PD-9501GO/48VDC.

According to Microsemi, the PD-9501G is tailor-made for high power Ethernet end terminals with 60 W of power. It is also backward compatible with any 802.3af terminal.

On the other hand, the PD-9501GO offers IEEE802.3at-compliant solution for outdoor installations. Ensuring 60 W of power , it is compatible with any standard PoE data terminal.

In addition, the PD-9501GO offers surge protection; ensuring indoor equipment is safeguarded from outdoor power surges.

Furthermore, both PD-9501G and PD-9501GO midspans facilitate devices to receive power, along with data, over standard Ethernet cables. This eliminates the need to alter network infrastructure completely.

“Our new PoE midspans fulfill today's need for devices to be powered by DC, as utilizing energy from solar panels or in telecom locations can often require this type of voltage level," said Sani Ronen, director of marketing for PoE systems at Microsemi, in a statement. "Microsemi's DC-powered solutions eliminate our customers' need to use AC or an external DC to AC power converter with AC midspans."
